At Exeter Child Anxiety Clinic, there is a focus on work with children and adolescents up to the age of 18. However, there is no strict cut-off and so psychological therapy can also be offered to young adults. Angie offers specialist assessment and therapy for all anxiety disorders including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Phobias and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Clients do not need to have an established diagnosis.
Although based in Exeter, sessions take place online and so the service can be accessed by children and adolescents nationwide. The clinic runs on Tuesdays and you will usually have the same appointment time each week.
There are three simple values at the heart of Exeter Child Anxiety Clinic.
The psychological therapy with the greatest evidence base for anxiety disorders is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and this is the primary therapeutic model used at the clinic. Angie delivers specialist CBT which is true to model, with appropriate adaptations made where needed, for example in the context of Autism Spectrum Condition.
At the core of CBT is the premise that our cognitions, behavioural responses and emotional experiences are all connected. In most anxiety disorders, the application of CBT involves facilitating shifts in behavioural patterns in order to generate alternative perspectives and elicit emotional change.
A good resource for finding out more about CBT is the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)
